GEN CON 2006 Report (continued)

SATURDAY

All Axxess Championship

149 people entered
8 rounds of Swiss
Top 32 cut (note: while we did have 70+ Superstars represented, I decided not to cut to a Top 64 as I believed it would represent too great a percentage of the field, especially when we also cut to a Top 32 the day before with 40 more people)

Why 40 fewer people on Saturday than Friday with Friday being historically a leaner day? The obvious answer is that Afterburn is indisputably a more popular format than All Axxess. But another part of the equation is that people had few options on Friday for “big” events from other game companies, whereas on Saturday there were boatloads of options.

(Kudos to Kevin Peters for making the Top 4 two days in a row; given the number of players, it’s truly an impressive accomplishment. Likewise, props to his player Jesse Coates for dominating both events at Origins and both events at Gen Con all with The Immortal One—will anyone ever play Immortal One at any event Jesse’s playing at? Why would you bother? Both of these players, along with guys like Matt and Joe Fetting and Craig Ewing are all just inches away from making the World Championships for the first time.)
